Sentence Structure Lesson

Sentence Structure:
*4 sentence types in English.
Simple Sentence:
Subject
+ verb +adjective/noun/prepositional phrase
Ex. My name is
Nate. I am a teacher. I am in class today.
I am happy. Today’s class is good.
Compound Sentence: Simple Sentence +
conjunction + Simple Sentence
My name is Nate. I am a teacher at ELS Philadelphia. = My name is Nate, and I am a
teacher at ELS Philadelphia.
Nate and Daniel are teachers at ELS. I teach and speak English. I am happy and excited today.
I work at ELS. I have a good time there = I work at ELS, and
I have a good time there.
I study a lot. I get bad grades = I study a lot, but I get
bad grades.
I study a lot. I get good grades = I study a lot, so I get
good grades.
I can eat dinner at a restaurant. I can eat at home = I can eat dinner at a
restaurant, or I can eat at home.
You can listen to me, or you can ignore
me, but you should listen to me.
I studied hard, for it was an important
quiz.
You are not friendly, nor are you
helpful.
I didn’t study, yet my exam was
successful.
Complex Sentence: Independent clause +
dependent clause
If you listen to me, you will learn.
If you get the best score, I will give
you $10,000!
When you leave class today, please turn
off the lights!
After the class is finished, you can go
home.
When I was at my appointment, the
officer told me I couldn’t get the visa.
When Nate comes to class, he teaches us
the lesson.
Before we have Nate’s lesson, we have a
lunch break.
